*ABOUT THE ROLE*

The Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider (APP) functions within the adult ICU areas and is an integral member of a multidisciplinary health care team. The APP functions primarily managing critically ill adults and serves as a resource throughout UKHC for intensive care interventions. The APP is generally on a service aligned team and manages the day-to-day patient care from ICU to step down to discharge.

In some instances, the APP may have responsibilities for this same patient population as they return for follow up in the outpatient setting. The APP also may play a role in the admissions process including ICU triage. The APP has a strong foundation in evidenced based practice and education and has a responsibility for ensuring an environment of safe quality care.

*UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital*: The University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital is a 569-bed acute care hospital. It has Central and Eastern Kentucky’s only Level I trauma center and handles the most severe traumas. It has the only Level 4 neonatal intensive care unit in the area to treat the sickest infants.

The hospital offers 100 intensive care beds, a post-anesthesia care unit, 17 operating rooms, 14-bed labor and delivery and 26 mother-baby rooms. The hospital draws upon the resources of six UK colleges: Medicine, Nursing, Health Sciences, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Public Health.

*AREA HIGHLIGHTS *

The division of critical care medicine provides primary consultative critical care in both the cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU) and the neurosciences ICU (NSICU) at UK HealthCare.

In the CVICU, our team works closely with surgeons to care for critically ill patients following complex cardiac and thoracic surgeries including both heart and lung transplants. The team also provides consultative support to patients requiring mechanical cardiac support devices such as ventricular assist devices (VADs) and total artificial hearts (TAH), as well as for those patients with severe cardiac or respiratory system failure requiring extra corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

In the NSICU, our multidisciplinary team works closely with stroke neurologists and neurosurgeons to care for a variety of intracranial pathologies including ischemic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, intracranial tumors, and patients with status epilepticus, as well as, to mitigate the effect of pre-existing or co-existing multi-organ dysfunction in these patients.

*QUALIFICATIONS*

* MSN for Nurse Practitioners OR BS for Physician Assistants
* I year of critical care experience required
* Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) Certification OR Physician Assistant Certified (PA-C).

Pay: $95,056.00 – $185,848.00 per year
